Bayou City Performing Arts (BCPA) began as the Montrose Singers in 1979 and became one of the first five gay male choruses in the country. The organization later expanded to include both the Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston and the Bayou City Women’s Chorus, performing for Houston audiences for four decades.
I worked with BCPA in 2017–2018 as a volunteer Marketing Director managing all aspects of marketing, creative design, and social media.
Project Overview
BCPA’s existing website no longer reflected the energy or professionalism of the organization. It was difficult to navigate, visually outdated, and challenging for staff and volunteers to update. They needed a modern site that could promote concerts clearly, support fundraising, and give each chorus a strong sense of identity.
My goal was to redesign the site so it felt welcoming, performance-driven, and easy to maintain.
The Problem
The previous site suffered from years of incremental edits and outdated templates. Important content (like concert announcements, tickets, and donor information) was buried several clicks deep. The design didn’t convey the artistry or vibrancy of the choruses, and the overall structure made it hard for the internal team to update pages without breaking layouts. The site also wasn’t mobile-friendly, which limited audience engagement.
What they needed was clarity, organization, and a digital presence that matched the quality of their performances.
The Solution
I rebuilt the website with a streamlined information architecture and new WordPress layout that gave BCPA a clear, modern visual identity. The homepage now highlights upcoming concerts, ticketing, and key actions for donors and new members. Each chorus has its own dedicated section with bios, photos, and mission details.
I created reusable templates for concerts, events, and news posts so staff and volunteers could add content easily without touching design code.
Behind the scenes, I reorganized the WordPress backend so everything is intuitive and accessible for nontechnical users. The entire site is mobile responsive, visually cohesive, and built with accessibility in mind.
The end result was a site that feels like a true performing arts organization: warm, expressive, and community-centered.
More About BCPA
BCPA was founded as the Montrose Singers, Inc. in November of 1979. Led by founding director Andy Mills, they were one of the first five gay male choruses in the United States, and continued to entertain audiences for 40 years.
Through music, theatre, and other forms of artistic expression, Bayou City Performing Arts promoted the ideals of tolerance, social justice, and inclusiveness. The performers were a diverse group of artists who combined a love of their art form with a commitment to excellence.
The Houston-based men’s chorus met with early successes marked by lavish productions at the Tower Theatre, featuring up to 80 singing members. The BCPA family of choruses expanded to include Gay Men’s Chorus of Houston (GMCH) and Bayou City Women’s Chorus (BCWC). I was privileged to volunteer as the BCPA Marketing Director and manage creative design and social media in 2017 and 2018.
